Managing Director of Institutional Advancement

We are seeking a Managing Director of Institutional Advancement to expand the development team. The Managing Director, Institutional Advancement will manage foundation, government, and corporate foundation support for all programs, campaigns, and general operating support. The Managing Director will oversee all institutional giving activities and will function strategically to develop strategies to sustain and grow institutional giving from current and prospective funders.

The Managing Director, Institutional Advancement will manage relationships with institutional funders, serving as both a front-line fundraiser and staff support for senior leadership when appropriate. Working with the Chief Development Officer, the Director will establish and oversee annual income goals for institutional giving and will cultivate and maintain relationships to meet or exceed these goals. The Managing Director, Institutional Advancement reports directly to the Chief Development Officer and supervises two Associate Directors.


  • Lead a comprehensive multi-year development strategy focused on foundations, corporate foundations, and government entities for general operating as well as program support
  • Develop and manage the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of funders, utilizing senior leadership, program staff, and board leadership when appropriate
  • Oversee prospecting, proposal writing, reporting, and positioning the organization for new and renewed support
  • Collaborate with the CEO, President, Chief Development Officer, and Board Chair to cultivate and solicit institutional funders, including site visits, virtual, or in-person meetings
  • In collaboration with Finance and Program staff, develop budget documents and solicitation materials, negotiate contracts, and oversee reporting within the prescribed time frame for each funder
  • Support cultivation events for foundation, corporate foundation, and government funders
  • Design and implement new donor recognition methods
  • In conjunction with the Chief Development Officer and Director, -Campaign, identify and solicit funders for- Campaign
  • Perform other duties to support the Development department/function, as assigned


  • A minimum of 10+ years of institutional fundraising experience
  • Superior writing skills and direct grant writing expertise as well as a track record of successfully securing institutional funding and exceeding contributed income goals in a competitive fundraising environment
  • Strong planning, strategy, financial, budgeting, and analytical skills
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to uphold deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, with powerful written and oral presentation abilities
  • Proficiency and experience with CRMs, preferably Salesforce
  • Proactive and creative problem-solver; adaptive to a growing, changing organization
  • Flexibility, resourcefulness, and a sense of humor
  • Must have the ability to be in NYC or other locations for in-person meetings with donors as needed
