Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer of The Trust for Public Land, the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) will direct the organization’s marketing communications with the objective of growing and engaging the organization’s donor base as well as increasing awareness of the brand.

About the Chief Marketing Officer
The CMO oversees brand management, PR, and national, state, and local marketing across print and digital channels—including an award-winning print magazine and a rapidly expanding social media presence and online audience. A key responsibility will be the strategic allocation of these marketing resources across competing priorities and a dispersed organization of 30 offices nationwide.
The CMO will develop and implement an integrated marketing plan in service of the organization’s conservation, fundraising, and visibility goals. Successful candidates will embrace and build upon the recent overhaul of the organization’s brand and serve as its most prominent ambassador and advocate—both within the organization and outside it. S/he will be charged with ensuring consistent and effective communication to target audiences including current and potential members and donors, foundations, corporations, government agencies, and community partners.
The CMO will manage a team of 17 marketing staff and work on a regular basis with the Board of Directors, the Chief Philanthropy Officer and other senior executives, divisional managing directors, state and local program directors, external stakeholders, and high-level donors. Successful candidates will be adept at navigating lateral relationships within a highly collaborative and consensus-driven organizational culture. Specific responsibilities include the following:
- Balance competing internal priorities to ensure that marketing efforts reflect the organization’s mission, programs, and fundraising goals.
- Develop and manage marketing plans, infrastructure, and personnel with an eye to maximizing efficiency in a lean, resource-constrained environment. Set measurable goals.
- Develop and implement best practices to ensure operating efficiency, fiscal accountability, and measurable ROI.
- Work closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer to advance public and private fundraising efforts, including taking a leadership position in planning and implementing a major capital campaign.
- Act as the primary marketing representative of the organization to the CEO, Executive Team, Division Directors, and the Board of Directors.
- Work with director of media relations to develop public relations and media strategy.
- Work with editorial director to produce and distribute all brand publications, including Land&People, brochures, case statements, blog, and digital media.
- Work directly with the CEO on internal communications.
Our client seeks a seasoned professional with at least 10 years of experience as a marketing leader and manager. The Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) will be a highly motivated, flexible, collaborative, and creative individual. This person will have a proven ability to manage complex integrated marketing strategies in a distributed organization. Candidates should have a strong track record of directing targeted marketing or advocacy campaigns and a deep understanding of digital and social media best practices. A nonprofit fundraising background and a personal passion for the organization’s mission are strongly preferred.

Team-building and marketing operations and management experience: The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success as an inspirational manager and mentor, with experience building and structuring marketing teams according to capacity and demand in a lean, resource-constrained environment. The candidate will have the ability to advise on organizational structure and develop and implement efficient workflows between a centralized marketing group and a widely dispersed client base.
Marketing, branding, strategic, and internal communications expertise across all channels: The successful candidate will be excited to adopt and build upon the strength of the organization’s brand. S/he will have a demonstrated ability to develop marketing strategies tailored for different audiences and channels, and to adapt those strategies in the face of organizational change. Experience developing digital and social media campaigns and communicating with an online audience is essential. Additional experience in internal communications is preferred.
Measurable impact: This person will have a proven record of decision-making based on measurable ROI. An evidence-based approach should apply to the candidate’s management of internal and external relationships; preparing, justifying and presenting business cases, budgets and plans; and measuring the impact of different strategies on audience growth and engagement. Top candidates will have a proven ability to monitor and communicate progress in measurable terms.
Clear communicator: The successful candidate will have experience communicating through a wide variety of media to diverse audiences. S/he will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills and can distill complicated concepts into consistent, digestible messages.
Interpersonal style: The successful candidate will be a collegial, empathetic leader who can drive innovation while appreciating the organization’s collaborative culture. This person must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to both articulate and manage varying perspectives diplomatically and constructively, with all levels of management and staff. Experience leading a centralized team within a decentralized organization is ideal.
